One of the reasons that i chose to listen to every 1974 Grateful Dead show in order, was that I had already heard a pretty big chunk of them. it didn't seem like much of a task to fill in the gaps. In fact, the Grateful Dead have officially released a lot of music from 1974. Something from every run (we'll get back to that).
Another reason, is that with only 40 shows, it seemed like an easy task. But the main reason, is that I love the Dead and I love 1974 and the Wall of Sound. It's great music.
I took a lot of notes, and i still haven't processed all the data, and I am not sure how I will even go about doing that, but this first post here is an initial attempt to sort out my thoughts.
On to the postgame analysis:
The Dead played 40 shows in 1974.
Still not ready for cold calculations. I'll ramble on a bit more.
June is the best month of 1974. May comes next. The whole year is great, but June is just so wild, so out-there, that the entire month needs to be heard as a whole. The Grateful Dead have released some good music from June, but still not one single complete show. This makes me happy. I am still holding out hope for a COMPLETE JUNE 1974 box set. It could happen. May is also really good. A little more "normal," a little more palatable to casual fans.
Best shows of June?
6/16 Des Moines
6/18 Louisville
6/23 Miami
6/26 Providence
Best shows of May?
5/14 Missoula
5/17 Vancouver
5/19 Portland
To be continued...
